Hello Steve
I get between 69-71 miles per gallon around town. Your MPG is very reliant on how light or heavy you are on the accelerator, a good tip is when you get up to speed ease off the pedal. With regard to dogs, with the seat back up my Labrador sits in there comfortably, with the seat back down and the floor raised you could fit the largest dog you like in there and still have room.
