Yaris cross automatic hybrid - problem coping with steep driveway

Hi. I need to go fairly slowly up a steep driveway before swinging into a garage but the car is hardly coping at all with the incline. It certainly doesn’t manage in ev mode but doesn’t seem to have enough revs or power when going slowly in fuel mode either. Any suggestions?

Hi Angela,

The Yaris Cross Hybrid relies on both the electric motor and petrol engine for power, but at very low speeds on a steep incline, it may struggle if it's trying to stay in EV mode. Here are a few things you can try to improve the climb:

Press the accelerator more firmly

  • The hybrid system may need a stronger input to engage the petrol engine fully. A light press might keep it in EV mode longer than ideal.

Use 'Power' mode

  • If your model has drive modes, switching to Power mode will make the throttle more responsive and give the engine priority over the battery.

Avoid creeping too slowly

  • Hybrid systems are designed for efficiency, and creeping uphill too slowly might limit the engine's ability to generate enough torque. Try a steady but controlled speed.

Turn off climate control and heavy electrical loads

  • This may free up a little extra power for the engine to handle the climb.

If it still struggles, it might be worth checking with Toyota to ensure the hybrid system is functioning properly.

Hope this helps! 😊
